  1. The Kickdrums’ Free Download of “Perfect World”

    October 20, 2010 by Steph

    kickdrums

The KickDrums are a 2-man team comprised of Alex Fitts and Matt Penttila started off as a hip hop production team, placing tracks with 50 Cent, Young Joe, and Chamillionaire , as well as producing a third of hometown heavyweight Ray Cash’s debut album. The KickDrums are pioneering a different sound, rock tinged with hip-hop production techniques.

The KickDrums released their first independent album titled Just a Game in 2009. The album was praised by the likes of Travis Barker, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, Dante Ross, and others. Hiphopdx.com called Just A Game “one of the year’s best non-rap albums.” The following year proved to be the busiest yet. Since then The KickDrums placed tracks with Kid Cudi and Scarface , while officially remixing Adelle, Ben Harper, Richard Ashcroft, Peter Bjorn and John, Kanye West and Good Charlotte.

The KickDrums are in the process of completing a project with long time collaborator DJ Mick Boogie. The project will include “best of” remixes from the past year as well as new original material remixed by a range or rappers including U-N-I, Curtains, The Kid Daytona, Joell Ortiz, and more. Currently The KickDrums are in the studio working on an album with legendary producer and artist the RZA aka Bobby Digital.

Sydney, Australia’s The Jezabels are set to head out on a national tour of Canada in support of Two Hours Traffic following the recent release of their new EP Dark Storm, out 10/1. 3. Lady Danville CMJ shows and Tour with Ben Folds

    October 17, 2010 by Steph

    Lady Danville

Lady Danville is an acoustic folk pop trio from Los Angeles, California. Making the trek cross country, the band will play 3 shows at the 2010 CMJ Music Marathon leading up to their tour with Ben Folds.

With Michael Garner on keys, Matthew Frankel on the cajon, and Dan Chang on the guitar Lady Danville prides themselves for their “well-crafted harmonies, thoughtful lyrics and refreshing dose of energy, wit and charm, evoking the sound of Simon and Garfunkel meets Death Cab for Cutie.”

Lady Danville formed in 2007 after meeting as members of UCLA’s Awaken A Cappella. Since then, the band has gone on to consistently sell out popular Los Angeles venues including the Troubadour, Viper Room, Hotel Café, and the El Rey. They have also shared the stage with Sara Bareilles, Jack’s Mannequin, and Adele. In 2009, the band ventured out of Los Angeles and began to attract more attention as they brought their music to the Pacific Northwest. In March of 2010 Lady Danville embarked on their first West Coast Tour and ended their run in Austin, TX making their debut appearance at the annual SXSW 2010 Music Festival. In April of 2010, they toured the East Coast where they played with Jack’s Mannequin kicking off their first ever East Coast tour.

Other accolades include the prominent feature of their song “Cast Away” on a recent episode of MTV’s The Real World: Washington DC as well as “Love to Love” on E!’s Keeping up with the Kardashians. Furthermore, their music has been consistently featured on Dorm Life, Hulu’s most watched web show, as well as on the acclaimed independent documentary Craigslist Joe. They have also earned tremendous praise from media outlets as diverse as LA Weekly, LAist.com, and Billboard.com.

Their most recent single is “Cars” and you can check out the video here: http://www.youtube.com/ladydanville#p/u/7/4ahvnRHvReM

  4. FREE EP from Kitten

    October 14, 2010 by Steph

Thanks to Dysonsound.com, I discovered this great 5-track EP called Sunday School from the band Kitten. It’s fantastic and worth way more than… 0 pennies. Female-fronted garage electro pop… it covers all the bases without sounding over-the-top. Has a bit of a ’90s girl rock vibe, but in a 2010 way. They’re already getting buzz at places like Nylon so jump on the Kitten Train now!

  5. The Rocket Summer Will Record “Maps” Cover

    October 6, 2010 by Steph

The Rocket Summer announced today on Twitter that he’ll be recording his cover of “Maps” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In June of last year he posted a video on Youtube of the cover and he’s been playing it at live shows for at least the last year. With an overwhelming response from fans, he’s decided to record the track and will release it, most likely as a single, in November or December of this year. In case you haven’t checked it out yet, watch the video below for the awesome track.

  6. Underoath’s Latest Album Takes a New Direction…and We Like it

    September 28, 2010 by Mary

Ø (Disambiguation) hits stores Nov. 9

Last week, I sampled Underoath’s upcoming release Ø (Disambiguation) at a listening party hosted by the band themselves. Members of the press hung out at Swing House Studios in Los Angeles Tuesday evening to hear the 38-minute album, which will be released Nov. 9.

This time around for their fifth album, Underoath took their sound to a new level, graduating from a younger metalcore sound that we’ve heard over and over to a darker, more experimental and mysterious sound that makes me want to hear more.

The first couple of tracks, “In Division” and “Catch Myself Catching Myself,” grabbed me with some catchy melodies, engaging guitar parts, and heavy, clean vocals. Spencer Chamberlain definitely beefed up his vocals for this album and set aside the high-pitched, trendy metalcore screaming that we’ve heard on some of their past albums.

    Underoath

Even though Ø (Disambiguation) is overall more laid back than past releases, the songs don’t drag on at all. They also blend together in a sort of continuum, like one flowing track the whole way through.

Toward the middle of the record, more electronic influences and sampling come through, adding additional color to the darkened mix on this record. The closing track of the album “In Completion,” was one of my favorites, reaching an awesome pinnacle from a slow start to a heavy finish.

Ø (Disambiguation) was a refreshing turn of the leaf for Underoath; a true mark that the group has grown. If you liked them already, prepare to love this album and gain a new respect for their music. And if you don’t like them, this may be the album that converts you.

  7. Counting Crows and Broken Lizard Comedy Group

    September 26, 2010 by Steph

    Counting Crows and Broken Lizard

This Friday Counting Crows and Broken Lizard sketch comedy group will be performing at the John Anson Ford Theater. Here are three huge reasons why I’m absolutely ecstatic to go:

    3. I’ve never been to the theater but I hear it’s awesome. About the John Anson Ford Theater, Yelp has given it 5/5 stars and the first review says, “If you have a chance to see a show here– do not miss the opportunity! The stage is in a magical outdoor setting, so intimate with a family and neighborhood feel– just wonderful.” Classy: check.

    2. The Broken Lizard (best known for the fantastic comedies Supertroopers and Beer Fest) will be performing. Apparently they teamed up with frontman of the Counting Crows Adam Duritz to create a movie called Freeloaders that they will play on Friday. The movie is described as, “a sort of tongue-in-cheek story about a group of loveable slackers living in the home of their super famous rock star friend…and what happens when they have to move out.” Laughter: check.
    1. Counting Crows will be playing. Songs like “Mr. Jones” and “Tuesday and Amsterdam” have permeated the airwaves since long before my teen years so it’s about time that I see this awesome American Rock Band live. Good Tunes: check.

Here’s the info. Come check out the show:
