  1. WATCH THIS: The Danks – “Automocar”

    April 26, 2012 by Steph

Hot off the press from one of my favorite labels, Hidden Pony brings us this great video from The Danks. It’s a kaleidoscopic, drug-hazed, fun-binge of slightly hazy indie rock and cotton candy.

Their new record Are You Afraid of the Danks is coming out on May 22nd and I have no doubt it’ll shine.

  2. HEAR THIS: Reptar’s Full Album Body Faucet

    April 25, 2012 by Steph

Reptar’s new record Body Faucet will be out on May 1st via Vagrant Records, but you can hear the whole thing right here. These guys are a riot live–I saw them a few months ago in Los Angeles. The record is catchy as hell and it wouldn’t surprise me if “Sebastian” turns into the Summer 2012 “Pumped Up Kicks” phenomenon. Listen now while it’s still a voluntary decision and you can say, “I knew them when…”

  3. WATCH THIS: Lydia – “Dragging Your Feet In the Mud”

    October 15, 2011 by Steph

Welcome back, Lydia. You tug at my heart strings and romanticize the world like high school young love. This video for “Dragging Your Feet In the Mud” does the same, chalk-full of images from Los Angeles’ Griffith Observatory to PCH on the California Coast. It’s been a long while since I’ve seen these guys, but they’ll be back in LA on November 5th at The Roxy on their new release Paint It Golden.

  4. Walking Sleep’s Tarp Sessions Vol. 3

Walking Sleep’s series of EPs, Tarp Sessions, will be released as a full length on collectable orange 12″ vinyl on November 1st. They’ll have some pre-order bundles available next week.
If you’re a frequent reader, you’re aware of my weakness for finely tuned indie pop withguy/girl vocals. Walking Sleep fits right in, rocking it out and romancing with the essence of the dreamy fifties. Grab your beau and catch them tonight at The Bootleg with Radical Face. Walking Sleep goes on at 8:45 so make sure to get there early.

  7. Miniature Tigers on tour with Freelance Whales!

    November 3, 2010 by Steph

Miniature Tigers, FortressWilliamsburg by-way of Phoenix indie rockers Miniature Tigers continue to gain momentum off their critically acclaimed sophomore album, Fortress, which Entertainment Weekly calls ‘all around enjoyable’ and Seattle Weekly pegged as ‘sensational, inspirational and celebrational.’ The band recently released a Where’s Waldo inspired video for the first single, ‘Bullfighter Jacket,’ which NPR selected as their Song Of The Day explaining that the song ‘quickly identifies itself as the band’s best work yet, with tight chord progressions and glimmers of yet more growth potential.’ Watch the video HERE.

Miniature Tigers were recently named one of SPIN Magazine‘s 5 Best New Artists For October. ‘What I like about them is that they could probably be a very successful, stand-issue indie-rock band aping Death Cab or Grizzly Bear or Vampire Weekend’ explains SPIN Music Editor Charles Aaron, ‘but they’re too restless and busting with ideas. Fortress is dazzling at times, and once they figure how to be baroque and pretentious without trying to hard, they’ll get even better.’

“A new Daytrotter session from Miniature Tigers just went live, listen HERE. ‘Miniature Tigers are one of the best examples America has of a young band working a something new, something old and something borrowed mentality with its songwriting. With each album they make more bold steps forward…They understand it all and what they’re producing are songs that are instant loves.’
“Miniature Tigers continue to be road warriors. After wrapping up a month with Neon Indian, The Tigers will hit the road again tomorrow for a string of dates with The Walkmen and Japandroids followed by a full US tour with Freelance Whales. All dates are below and feel free to send guest list requests my way.”

  8. The Kickdrums’ Free Download of “Perfect World”

    October 20, 2010 by Steph

    kickdrums

The KickDrums are a 2-man team comprised of Alex Fitts and Matt Penttila started off as a hip hop production team, placing tracks with 50 Cent, Young Joe, and Chamillionaire , as well as producing a third of hometown heavyweight Ray Cash’s debut album. The KickDrums are pioneering a different sound, rock tinged with hip-hop production techniques.

The KickDrums released their first independent album titled Just a Game in 2009. The album was praised by the likes of Travis Barker, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, Dante Ross, and others. Hiphopdx.com called Just A Game “one of the year’s best non-rap albums.” The following year proved to be the busiest yet. Since then The KickDrums placed tracks with Kid Cudi and Scarface , while officially remixing Adelle, Ben Harper, Richard Ashcroft, Peter Bjorn and John, Kanye West and Good Charlotte.

The KickDrums are in the process of completing a project with long time collaborator DJ Mick Boogie. The project will include “best of” remixes from the past year as well as new original material remixed by a range or rappers including U-N-I, Curtains, The Kid Daytona, Joell Ortiz, and more. Currently The KickDrums are in the studio working on an album with legendary producer and artist the RZA aka Bobby Digital.

  9. Song of the Week – The Jezabels’ “Mace Spray”

    October 19, 2010 by Steph

The Jezabels - Dark StormIn honor of The Jezabels’ shows at CMJ this week, their single “Mace Spray” from their newest release the Dark Storm EP is our Song of the week.

Sydney, Australia’s The Jezabels are set to head out on a national tour of Canada in support of Two Hours Traffic following the recent release of their new EP Dark Storm, out 10/1. The North American trip begins with several appearances at the CMJ Music Marathon before heading north to Canada for a show in Toronto and 8 dates as main support for Two Hours Traffic.

The Jezabels have tirelessly toured Australia since the release of their EP She’s So Hard in November 2009. The band has supported artists like Tegan & Sara, Katie Noonan and Josh Pyke as well as selling out their own headlining shows. Additionally, the singles “Hurt Me” and “Easy to Love” from the EP She’s So Hard received heavy rotation on radio in Australia and abroad.

The newest EP and the third of a trilogy of EPs (beginning with 2009’s The Man Is Dead) represents the band’s most confident outing to date–moody, mysterious, and epic, yet buzzing with the quartet’s ever-present knack for an irresistible pop hook.
