  1. SQUATCHING: Zola Jesus

    June 6, 2012 by Marwood

Dressed all in white, in contrast to her black-clad backing band, Zola Jesus gives the impression of a woman not used to shrinking into the background. When the Yeti Stage’s flaky sound system starts to waver, her response is to climb onto the on-stage speaker and sing her lungs out.

Her operatic education is apparent in a voice seemingly too forceful for her slight frame – her descent into the photographic pit sees her disappear from sight for most of the audience. But her enthusiasm prompts her to vault the fence and continue singing as she skips around the edges of the crowd. Just as she risked being encircled, her latest dramatic gothy anthem reached a shrieking climax, and she was able to dart back though to protective barrier and its none-too-impressed security guards.

  2. SQUATCHING: Wild Flag

    June 6, 2012 by Marwood

Wild Flag Sasquatch Festival 2012 1

Wild Flag strut their guitar-hero poses and play an enthusiastic brand of rock that sounds more Sleater Kinney-esque live than it does on record. Despite her presence, they’re not just Carrie Brownstein’s band, and it falls to co-vocalist Mary Timony to delivery the first truly funny line of the day, when she explains how glad they are “to be here in this Whitesnake wind-tunnel video.”

The band play energetic rock with real weight and fuzz, and with none of punk’s fear of guitar solos. Well-worked harmonies and solid tunes, such as the punk-pop ‘Romance,’ stop things becoming overly heavy, and overall they represent a beacon of energy in the sea of earnestness that risks flooding the smaller stages.

  3. SQUATCHING: Girl Talk

    May 24, 2012 by Dave

    DOWNLOAD: MP3 of “No Pause”

To this day, GirlTalk remains one of the best shows that I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing.  I feel that it’s important to make a distinction between “seeing” or “going to” and “experiencing”.  He was playing a festival in San Diego on one of the back stages tucked away in a poorly lit alley at the same time as Modest Mouse.  This becomes important because that meant that there was an incredible filter going on in the audience.  Everyone that was watching Gregg Michael Gillis go nuts on his laptop wanted very much to be there.  The back alley was packed and the energy was palpable.  There wasn’t a single moment I wanted to raise my camera to take a photo because I was too busy dancing like a crazy person.  And beyond that, I have the deepest respect for anyone that can successfully mix 322 samples in a single album. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3296/2968758633_2ffac11f83_b.jpg (source material for “Feed the Animals”)

  4. SQUATCHING: Reptar

    May 24, 2012 by Dave

Reptar’s unique nature is immediately evident through their masterful representation of the Windows 3.1 browser system on their website http://reptarmusic.com/.   Their new album Body Faucet (released May 1) is a welcome follow up to their debut EP  Oblangle Fizz Y’all which left me just wanting more.  5 tracks just simply wasn’t enough and Body Faucet delivers.  Their live show is one of the most talked about aspects of this group so if you’re hitting Sasquatch this year this band is a must see.

  5. SQUATCHING: HoneyHoney

    May 24, 2012 by Dave

    Honeyhoney – Ohio by buzzbands

HoneyHoney will be one of the very first band’s performing at Sasquatch this year and I couldn’t be more excited.  They hold a special place in my heart hailing from my old home of Venice Beach.  Singer Suzanne Santo and guitarist Ben Jaffe bring a unique sound with a skillful combination of jazz, soul, bluegrass and rock with a hit of old fashion wild west country.   With fiddles and banjos just as much incorporated in their music as heavy guitars and soulful vocals it’s hard to place this group into one classification.  HoneyHoney’s genre spanning sound is not something to be missed.

  6. SEE THIS: tUnE-YarDs and St. Vincent

    April 17, 2012 by Steph

I’ve never been to Coachella, but I say with confidence that I don’t regret that. But I do suppose that I owe the festival a big “THANK YOU!” for sending this amazing co-headlining show my way. In between the Coachella weekends this year, there are amazing shows in the outskirts of LA and tUnE-yArDs and St. Vincent at The Glass House in Pomona this Thursday 4/19 is the best one.

I have been completely obsessed with both of these bands this year. My crush on St. Vincent is clear from the love I’ve been giving the project on my site (WATCH THIS: St. Vincent – “Cheerleader” / Favorite Albums of 2011). tUnE-yArDs has gotten less textual support, but I love Meryl nearly as much. I’M SO EXCITED!

  7. Reptar in LA

    February 26, 2012 by Steph

    Reptar

I loved Rugrats, so with a name like “Reptar,” you’re bound to get my attention. And it’s not just me– this Georgia-based band has been collecting quite a following since 2008. Their debut album Body Faucet was produced by Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Washed Out) and will be released on Vagrant Records on May 1st (review coming soon).

They’ll be playing at SXSW and supporting buzzed-about band Grouplove on tour this Spring. If you’re like me and want to catch them early, come see them at The Echo this Wednesday with Quiet Hooves and Lucius.

  8. Walking Sleep’s Tarp Sessions Vol. 3

    October 11, 2011 by Steph

Walking Sleep’s series of EPs, Tarp Sessions, will be released as a full length on collectable orange 12″ vinyl on November 1st. They’ll have some pre-order bundles available next week.
If you’re a frequent reader, you’re aware of my weakness for finely tuned indie pop withguy/girl vocals. Walking Sleep fits right in, rocking it out and romancing with the essence of the dreamy fifties. Grab your beau and catch them tonight at The Bootleg with Radical Face. Walking Sleep goes on at 8:45 so make sure to get there early.

  9. Vanaprasta at the Thirsty Crow

    October 5, 2011 by Steph

The show with Vanaprasta at the Thirsty Crow was a huge success. The band’s acoustic show is sensational and the crowd was dancing, singing, and a mob of rambunctious excited energy. The highlight for me was the newest single “Nine Equals Nine” from their upcoming album Healthy Geometry. They have a Monday night residency at The Satellite in november and if you don’t make it out at for at least one of the shows, you’ll be missing out on something sensational.
