  1. Check out The Gay Blades

    September 3, 2010 by Steph

The Gay BladesWinning the prize for one of the strangest band name circulating the music scene right now (next to Neon Dick and Nude Boy) is The Gay Blades. The duo will be releasing their sophomore album Savages on October 5th on Triple Crown Records/ILG. They’ve toured with bands like Cursive, MGMT, The Black Lips, Matt and Kim, Ra Ra Riot, Jack’s Mannequin, Juliette Lewis, and Electric Six and they’ve managed to build their following on “their side-stepping demeanor, their unpredictable live shows, and, of course, their unhinged manic sound.”

To get a taste of what you can expect from The Gay Blades on their upcoming release, check out their single, “Try To Understand

  3. Margaret Cho collaborates with Andrew Bird

    August 12, 2010 by Steph

Funny-lady Margaret Cho is releasing her album Cho Dependent on August 24th. The songs are all writen by an adeptly-chosen indie rock cast including Tegan & Sara, Ben Lee, Andrew Bird, Fiona Apple, Ani DiFranco, Jon Brion, and Andrew Bird. All of the songs are hysterical and skip over any “tongue-in-cheek” and go straight for the money with songs like “Intervention,” “Your Dick,” “My Puss,” “Gimme Your Seed,” and “Captain Cameltoe.”

For “I’m sorry,” she collaborated with Andrew Bird on a country “murder ballad” in the vein of Loretta Lynn. She’s oh so apologetic about killing her lover and the sarcasm is as comical as her dancing around with her zombie-lover Bird in the video. It is somewhat eerie that there’s a real backstory to this song… for the Huffington Post, Cho explained that the story stemmed from a 17-year-old unrequited crush she had, who she was afraid to look up for fear he’d have a perfect life. Come to find out, when she caved and looked him up, his wikipedia page said that in”2007 was convicted of the murder of his wife. He bludgeoned her to death and then stuffed her body in the attic of their house for a month until it had partially mummified.” WEIRD!

  4. Lost in the Trees played at Spaceland!

    August 10, 2010 by Steph

Lost in the Trees press image from http://www.lostinthetrees.com/Lost in the Trees was the opening band at Spaceland in Los Angeles last night and they are hands down one of the best live act I’ve seen in a while. With a violin, two cellos, a drum set, an acoustic guitar, accordion, french horn, glockenspiel, xylophone, gorgeous male lead vocals and a haunting soprano harmony how could you possibly resist?

I managed to capture a great video of the “Song for the Painter” and while it’s amazing, it wasn’t even chose to my favorite of the night. Check out “Walk Around the Lake” and the title track off their new CD “All Alone In An Empty House.” Their new CD All Alone In An Empty House was released today so check it out!

  5. WTF, Weezer?

    August 10, 2010 by Steph

Hurley to be released September 14, 2010

About this new album cover, frontman Rives Cuomo explains to Pitchfork, “We just wanted to use that picture of Jorge Garcia’s face on the cover. It’s such an amazing album cover, and we didn’t want to have any other words on it, so we just figured everyone was going to call it Hurley, so that’s what we call it.”

    Ok….

  6. New Album from Chiodos – October 5th

    August 10, 2010 by Steph

    Chiodos-IlluminaudioIlluminaudio

    Available October 5th

This will be the first Chiodos record with the new vocalist Brandon Bolmer(formerly of Yesterday’s Rising) and drummer Tanner Wayne (formerly of Underminded and Scary Kids Scaring Kids). It’ll be interesting seeing the fan reaction to the replacement of such distinct vocals.

Bradley Bell (keys) responds to this potential criticism, “Even if the lineup had stayed the same, I feel that the direction of sound would’ve turned out similar. We don’t feel like our vision was lost or compromised in any way throughout the writing process.”

Bell adds, “We put an incredible amount of thought, time, sacrifice, emotion, and stress into the process of making this beautiful monster. I believe all of that will shine through the music as soon as people press play.”

Illuminaudio was written over the course of 15 months and was recorded just outside of New York City at The Machine Shop, with producer Machine [Lamb Of God, Every Time I Die, Cobra Starship].

Pre-order packages for the album will be available on MerchNow next week. The complete tracklisting for Illuminaudio can be seen below:

    8. Let Us Burn One
    9. Hey Zeus! The Dungeon

  7. The Posies’ single from upcoming release Blood/Candy

    August 7, 2010 by Steph

The Posies, a 23-year-old Seattle-based rock band, are accompanied by a “star-studded cast” on their upcoming record Blood/Candy to be released on September 28th on Ryko. The new single “Licenses to Hide” features the vocals of Lisa Lobsinger (lead singer of Reverie Sound Revue and vocalist of Broken Social Scene) and other guest vocalists include Kay Hanley (Letters To Cleo) on “The Glitter Prize,” Hugh Cornwell (Stranglers) on “Plastic Paperbacks,”  and Paco Loco (Australian Blonde and Paco Loco Trio) on “Enewetak.” You will also hear strings on the record, which are arranged by the Grammy-nominated Phil Peterson, who has played on recent albums for Owl City and Nada Surf.

Of the single “Licenses to Hide,” Posies’ principles Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow said this in a recent Spin interview:

Ayer: ” ‘License to Hide’ is one of two songs on the record that I think is so completely out of left field for us. I always thought that the Posies should have something that resembles a showtune in our canon… On a certain day, it could be in one of the Muppet movies — and I mean that in a good way.”

Stringfellow: “It’s just about shedding the inhibitions to be yourself. So many people present themselves as the people they want to be seen as — and there’s something noble about that. As you grow older, you might earn the right to be that person, having tried other things, and maybe that person isn’t so bad.”

Beginning on the US album release date (Sept. 28), the band will launch their European tour, starting in Spain. Tour dates are yet to be released.

  8. The Lonely Forest to release an EP

    August 7, 2010 by Steph

    The Lonely Forest EP

Hey! I was just listening to them!

That’s what I said when I received a press release today for The Lonely Forest’s digital-only EP to be released on Chris Walla’s (of Death Cab for Cutie) label Trans on September 14th. This Washinton-based band has taken to writing “brilliant pop songs featuring lyrics about spiritual longing wedded to an almost prog-rock sensibility.” In essence, they’re fantastic.

The EP is just a taste of what we’ll be getting in 2011 with their upcoming full-length Arrows and if this is any indication, you can count me in for that $9.99 on opening week!

  9. Miniature Tigers

    July 19, 2010 by Steph

    Miniature Tigers, Fortress

    F O R T R E S S out July 27th on Modern Art Records/ILG

When I first heard the single “Gold Skull featuring Neon Indian” from Miniature Tigers’ sophomore album FORTRESS it was right about the time MGMT’s Congratulations was released and I thought, “now this is what MGMT’s sophomore album should have sounded like.” It opens with a catchy electronic melody, quickly joined by a slow and simple electronic drum beat. The hollow sound of the vocals and the experimental synthesized harmonies create an ethereal sound, sending the listener into a dream-like state.

While hopeful that the rest of the album would carry through with this electro pop, upon listening to the other tracks I was completely caught off guard. That’s not to say the rest of the album isn’t great, but none of the tracks quite matched up to the potential of the single. The feeling of this dream-like state carries through on the album FORTRESS, however, many of the other tracks lack the catchy-ness of “Gold Skull.” Many of the songs have a heavy Beatles-influence, slathering the tracks with surf-rock guitarMiniature Tigers, but layered with a certain hauntedness. Not suprising since they recorded the album at Dreamland, a converted 19th century house deep in the woods of Upstate New York.

Overall, I really enjoyed the record. The single is definitely my favorite and a major stand-out track. However, if you pop the CD in your player, you won’t be disappointed.
