Tonight’s show at the Crocodile is just filled to the brim with incredible diverse and explosive talent.  It’s one of those shows where the openers could be headliners and the headliner transcends.

Dessa is in no uncertain terms; a wordsmith.  She has been described as a combination of Mos Def and Dorothy Parker due to her mastery of the written and spoken word and the dry wit with which it is delivered.  She began in the world of poetry slam while earning both her BA and MA in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota before her incredible live performances brought her into the Doomtree hip hop collective where she quickly established a name for herself with the release of her solo EP False Hopes in 2005.  Doomtree’s artists work together frequently and on track 3 (Press On) of False hopes you’ll find SiMs who we will be touring in support of her this time around.  Dessa spent years appearing on many tracks in support of other Doomtree artists before releasing her first full length album “A Badly Broken Code” which was received incredibly well and cemented her as a voice in the indie hip hop world. 2. Said the Whale @ The Tractor in Seattle

    July 8, 2013 by Dave

Said the Whale joined Seattle at The Tractor Tavern in Seattle recently touring in support of the recently dropped EP I Love You.  It’s a three-track window into their most recent album effort still taking shape with a release due this fall.  It’s a little more indie pop than before and it’s just as damn good.  Said the Whale describes the tracks as “the most upbeat songs from a collection of 17 tracks that we’ve recorded since we began work on the album in January”.

  3. Free Energy @ The Tractor in Seattle, WA

    June 26, 2013 by Dave

Free Energy absolutely killed it on stage while in Seattle throwing down an incredibly energetic set.  These guys are an unreal amount of fun on stage.  They got the crowd going at what I’ve usually seen as a kinda calm joint.  They played a bunch of tracks off their new album Love Sign as well as their older equally dance-infectious tracks from Stuck on Nothing.  Definitely not a band to be missed if they’re in your town.

Another thing I have to call out from the show was The West, the opening opening act of the night. The crowd interaction for a group that early in the night was insane.  Insane and also completely understandable with the driving dance beats and the fantastic vocals laid down by Darnell and Adrienne.  It was very reminiscent to the energy of LCD Soundsystem. They were incredible! Take a listen below.

  4. New Kate Nash U.S. Tour Dates

    June 13, 2013 by Steph

I am obsessed with Kate Nash. I pledged for her signed LP. I rocked hard at her LA show a few weeks ago (the second time I’ve had the privilege of seeing her live). And I am now counting the days until her return to LA in November. Aside from knowing what to do with a guitar and “the same four chords” as she would tell you, she’s also a vegetarian, a brutal and awesome feminist, and activists for young women. She told a story at her LA show about the organization she founded Rock and Roll After School Program and a young girl who hated the world and who she helped express that through music. She also yelled at the crowd that we need more girls in rock. “Learn 4 chords,  start a band!” said she. SWOON.

As a gift to you all for listening to me gush, I am sharing this “OMYGOD” IMOL remix (after the jump):

  5. Big Black Delta Summer Tour

    June 10, 2013 by Steph

    big black delta

If you haven’t seen Big Black Delta live, I say to you this: YOU. ARE. INSANE. Why the F&$# not!? But in all seriousness, Jonathan Bates and his dual drumming ladies put on one of the best live shows I’ve seen, which can only be improved in majesty by the venue (it’s a little hard to put on a great light show in a club that only holds 300). The amount of energy, throbbing, and raw sexual tension that emits from the stage during a Big Black Delta show could be bottled and sold for a pretty penny. To describe the music would be to limit its potential and that would be criminal–suffice it to say that Bates was the driving force behind alt rock band Mellowdrone and he has since been heavily involved in M83 and worked with White Sea, but that this creative venture pushes the boundaries of the extremes of each.

  6. Foals 2013 @ Nepture Theatre in Seattle

    June 7, 2013 by Dave

One thing was clear with Saturday’s show that had been added at the last moment after Friday’s sold out immediately after going on sale; Yannis Philippakis and his Foals band mates were not fucking around. From guitars smashed on stage to singers descending from second story balcony’s into the hands of the crowd that was pumped on each heavy guitar hit and soaring vocal line Foals established quickly that they are damn good live. Fellow photographer AJ Dent and I had plenty of things to capture the attention of our lenses during the show with theatrical lighting displays during a very high energy performance. 7. SQUATCHING: Gold Leaves

    June 29, 2012 by Marwood

    Gold Leaves Sasquatch 2012 2

Seattle singer-songwriter Grant Olsen (formerly of Arthur and Yu)’s Gold Leaves opened proceedings on the Yeti stage on Monday, and probably deserved a better slot. Being the opening act on the fourth day of a festival can’t be easy, but the soaring five-piece put on a good show for the few who’d made it out of their tents.

  8. SQUATCHING: Electric Guest

    Electric Guest at Sasquatch 2012

I was pleasantly surprised by Electric Guest.  Just like last year with Wye Oak I walked up having not yet heard them before thus the slate was clean.  Quite simply put, Asa Taccone can sing.  His range was a highlight of the performance from the falsettos featured in “This Head I Hold” to the full rich sound of “Under the Gun”.

  9. SQUATCHING: Pretty lights

I walked into this performance an avid Pretty Lights fan, but I think I did so with an inaccurate understanding of his music having not seen him live before.  In most situations, when I’m listening to his work I myself am working.  I would not go so far as to say that his music is suited only for background, but on the main stage Friday night it felt a little less than substantial.  There was a bit of a mass exodus as the crowd who had just heard Girl Talk and an impromptu Macklemore performance suddenly realized just how late it was.  While the tracks began and ended with intensity, somewhere in the middle of each the energy was lost.  During these drones of anonymity waves of people would leave, climbing up the glowstick-strewn grassy hill.   While I didn’t leave this set unhappy, I did leave with a different understanding of his music and my enjoyment of it.
