  1. Oax album The Distance

    July 26, 2011 by J-Man

If you’ve ever read any of my reviews, you know that I have a special place in my heart for albums that are real. I like albums that are more human and less computer. I like real drums, as opposed to drum machines. When my editor-in-chief sent me a track off of This Distance, the new EP from Oax, it hit me right in that “this is real” heart place.

I would even venture as far as to call this EP raw, and I would mean it in the most positive way possible. The guitars feedback. The cymbal hits aren’t uniform. You can hear that someone is playing the music you are listening to, and that someone is Angelini Giorgio. Aside from the closer on the EP, ‘Sutures’, everything on the album was written and played by Giorgio.

On my first listen through, this album made me want to drive. I wanted to feel wind, and watch mountains and hills pass by. I wanted to cruise down Highway 1 and listen to this and remember good times and bad times. Then I read the story behind the album and understood why.

Angelini had been on a hiatus from music, after leaving The Rosebuds and going back to school. Then he went through a hard breakup. Then he sat down and wrote music, by himself. This EP is the result of an emotional dam breaking. I listened to the album a second time and I could feel the lyrics. I empathized with the man singing about the sins he had committed, and the sins committed against him, and the culmination of all these sins and how they make up the lives that we lead.

What I’m trying to tell you is that this music is good. It is really good.

  2. Tasseomancy’s “Healthy Hands (will mourn you)”

    July 20, 2011 by Steph

Since my first introduction, I’ve been completely sold on this band. Their dark and dreamy “psych folk” is charming and completely encapsulating. If Sea of Bees had en evil twin, it would be Tasseomancy. Or, if Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. had a goth little sister, you’d find it in this band. That said, the two Lightman sisters, Sari and Romy, also draw on nostalgia with hints of 60s girl pop a la The Shangri-Las.

I’m very excited for their new record Ulalume! to come out August 30th. In the meantime, you can download their track “Healthy Hands (will mourn you)” below.

  3. Kid Infinity’s Video for “The End Is Never Now”

    June 18, 2011 by Kaitlin

Electronic duo Kid Infinity captures their LA underground culture in the new music video for “The End Is Never Now.” The music video is an energetic compilation of footage from their live performances and arts collective, FMLY’s organized bike rides, which combine music, bikes, and friends. Costumes, lasers, and dancing crowds galore, Kid Infinity’s video displays their total involvement and dedication to creating aural and visually dynamic live shows. Their party atmosphere and infectious sound are sure to please in their new video.

  4. Twiggy Frostbite’s “By the Ocean”

    June 15, 2011 by Steph

    Twiggy Frostbite

After browsing some international blogs yesterday, I came across a great track by a band called Twiggy Frostbite from Borlänge, Sweden. These lovely ladies could be straight out of a couture fashion shoot and their music is just as lovely. The indie pop project has hints of shoegaze and a bit of the signature Scandinavian ethereal-ness. “By the Ocean” is completely beautiful, and every second captures your full attention with a hushed sense of despondence and passion.

Not sure if this song will be on an upcoming full-length, but will possibly be part of a limited-edition 7-inch release.

  5. Vanaprasta’s New Song “G-“

    June 3, 2011 by Steph

    G- Album Art, Vanaprasta

Until a few weeks ago, Vanaprasta was a name that kept popping up around town, but I hadn’t taken the time to listen. Then at The Roxy with Saint Motel I finally had a chance to catch this omnipresent LA band. Their experimental and psychedelic rock made for an energetic and interesting live show. It’s no wonder they’ve shared the bill with heritage bands Smashing Pumpkins and Slash.

The band is currently preparing the release of their first full-length in late 2011. In the meantime, they’ll be releasing three tracks, the first of which is “G-” (pronounced G minus). “G-” is a Southern-tinged The Mars Volta with sultry vocals and a wailing guitar. These guys are barely an LA secret now, but they certainly won’t be come 2012 if “G-” is any indication of the quality of their record.

Check it out “G-” below. Soon to come: “Supernumerary” and “Crushing Ants.”

Saucy video for “G-” is NSFW!

  6. Sounds of Sasquatch: 2011

    May 27, 2011 by Steph

You have your camping gear, a cell phone charger, and your most hipster set of clothes and you’re ready to hit the Gorge for Sasquatch Festival. What’s left? Winnie Cooper has hooked you up with a Survival Guide and I am happy to provide the tunes for the drive. I’ve decided to include a sampling of almost every artist in attendance (leaving out only those I couldn’t find). Download and preview the sweet acts you’re about to experience. Or, if you can’t make it to Seattle this year, you’ll get a little taste of what you’re missing.

Remember, these tunes are for a preview only so if you dig the bands, go buy their music. If any of these tracks belong to you and you would like them removed, please let me know.

  7. :papercutz’s Sun Glitters Remix

    May 4, 2011 by Steph

:papercutz’s self-description is “adventurous pop music” so on first introduction a few months ago, I knew it was right up my alley. Recently I was approached by a member of the band with this new official remix of Sun Glitters’ “Love Me.” Sun Glitters, of course, has been covered by Pitchfork and Altered Zones.

A toning down of the original track, which itself is quite ambient and mellow, :papercuts has created a remix filled with cinematic lucidity. The remix brings an ethereal quality to the song whose rises and falls are dramatic but not brash. :papercuts definitely brings a new sensibility to the song in a great way.

Maybe Frank and Pooch will agree? ; )

The track is on a 17-track album of Sun Glitters remixes called everything could be remodeled and that’s fine! featuring Teen Daze, Blackbird Blackbird, NIVA, Essay and more (California’s Ufolk Records).

  8. I Adore Savoir Adore

    April 23, 2011 by Steph

A friend at Popmatters recently described one of his favorite bands as “beautifully noisy pop” and it really struck a chord with me (pun intended). That perfectly describes music I love. Beautiful melodies and essentially pop music, but just dirty enough to be interesting and provoke  repeat listens.

Brooklyn’s Savoir Adore gets slipped into this genre, along with Metric, The New Pornographers, and Superchunk. Although they have a bit more sheen than some (their bio calls them “dream pop” and “adventure wave”), Paul Hammer’s and Deidre Muro’s soft vocals, their noisy guitar riffs, and melodic tinkering certainly gives the ear enough to play with. Their album In the Wooded Forrest was released on Cantora Records in July 2009. They’re making new music as we speak and hopefully will have a sophomore release by the end of the year.

Neon Gold premiered their track “Sparrows” at the end of March and it’s magical.

  9. New Album from Dawes – Nothing Is Wrong

    April 22, 2011 by Steph

ATO Records will release Los-Angeles-based Dawes sophomore album Nothing Is Wrong on June 7, 2011. Nothing Is Wrong is the follow-up to their Dawes’ 2009 debut, North Hills, after the dissolution of Simon Dawes. The album was recorded on 2″ analog tape (how retro), however they claim it’s a way “of focusing their energies and affirming their dedication to the creative process.” Guests on the record include Benmont Tench of The Heatbreakers on the organ and Jackson Brown’s guest vocals on “Fire Away.”

The band describes themselves as “American rock n’ roll” and includes singer/guitarist Goldsmith, his brother Griffin on drums, keyboardist Tay Strathaim, and bassist Wylie Gelber. Their songs reflect a healthy influence of folk and country.

Goldsmith is also a part of the supergroup Middle Brother with John McCauley of Deer Tick and Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit.

Check out the new single “If I Wanted Someone”
