  1. HEAR THIS: Laurel Collective – “They Hate Me”

    April 5, 2012 by Steph

Upbeat indie pop from London, Laurel Collective is groovy, noisy, and uber-cool. They signed with an offshoot of Domino Records, Double Six, in their infancy. A sensational introduction to the band with “They Hate Me,” I’m dying to see what these guys come up with on their upcoming debut via Tape Club/Believe.

Aside from working on their own music, they also do their part to foster the indie scene. Apparently they host a now-famous secret festival in a remotely-located forest (called In the Woods), which has featured the likes of Micachu and the Shapes, The Invisible, Pete and the Pirates, and Anna Calvi on the bill. They also hosted a regular night called ‘Hindenburg Mile-High Club’ for a short time in London.

Seems like I should have heard of these guys by now. Have you?

  2. HEAR THIS: Of Monsters and Men – “Little Talks”

    April 2, 2012 by Steph

Yes, I now that I’m late on this. But I’m sharing anyway. This sextet indie-folk band from Garðabær, Iceland is extremely talented. As are most bands that are able to make it onto the international scene out of the oblivion that is the icy north. Love it!

  3. Anna Vogelzang

    February 6, 2012 by Steph

It’s practically impossible for me to stop dancing in my seat as I write this. Anna, a soulful alto, has written a deliciously-saccharine  pop song. Think Hall & Oats “You Make My Dreams Come True,” but with a female vocalist, more handclaps, and set in something more adorable and teen like Freaky Friday or A Cinderella Story. Ok…. maybe it’s my 15-year-old self that loves this.

Her album Canary In A Coal Mine will be released on February 28th via Paper Anchor Music.

  4. Choir of Young Believers

    February 4, 2012 by Steph

Choir of Young Believers from Denmark is sci-fi pop with 80s/Joy Division undertones. The beats are muted and the synth is prominent on “Patricia’s Thirst.” “Nye Nummer Et” takes a wholer, more cinematic tone, swelling with a violin and minor-key falsetto, bordering on Active-Child indie-opratic.

Their sophomore album Rhine Gold will be released March 20 on Ghostly International and they’ll be on a U.S. tour this Spring. See them in L.A. at The Echo on March 9th.

    From Stereogum – “Patricia’s Thirst”

  5. HEAR THIS: Breanne Düren – “No One Else” (Tokyo Police Club Remix)

    October 13, 2011 by Steph

Those awesome folks over there at Some Kind of Awesome premiered this track about a week ago. While playing local gigs at the University of Minnesota, Breanne met Adam Young of Owl City and was recruited to sing  backup on tracks like  “The Saltwater Room” and “Honey and the Bee.” Before you pass any judgement, check out some of her originals from her debut EP Sparks, which was released in March of this year. Then check out this great Tokyo Police Club remix of “No One Else.”

  6. SEE THIS: Big Black Delta’s Album Release Show at The Satellite

    September 26, 2011 by Steph

“Capsize” from BBDLP1 out September 26 on Coming Home Records

If you live in Los Angeles and you haven’t been to one of Big Black Delta’s shows yet, you’d be making a huge mistake by missing the last night of their residency at The Satellite tonight. I’ve been to a few already and the live show is incredible–no house lights, just a multi-colored light board synchronized with the music. Jonathan Bates (aka Big Black Delta) slinking around the stage with the mic chord slung over his shoulders twiddling with his laptop and, let’s not forget, two female drummers with full kits frame either side of the stage–Mahsa Zargaran and Amy Wood. It’s 35 minutes of pure energy and once you’ve emerged from the pool of vibrations, you will be converted.

Plus, some perks of this last show: today marks the release of Big Black Delta’s debut LP BBDLP1. They’ll be selling their limited-edition colored vinyl tonight, which I think is pretty damn sexy.

Also, highly-buzzed band Letting Up Despite Great Faults will be playing just before BBD so get there early!

    SET TIMES:
9.26 Los Angeles, CA @ The Satellite (Free Residency, BBD record release party)
12 pm – Echoes de Luxe
11 pm – Big Black Delta
10 pm – Letting Up Despite Great Fault
    9 pm – Death Kit

And in case you’re a new fan, download the older EP for free…

  7. Interview with Appeitite

    August 4, 2011 by Steph

I’ve recently been introduced to the amazing musical project of Teddy Briggs from Sacramento, CA–Appetite. The music on Appetite’s recent album Scattered Smothered Covered plays with rhythms and silly melodies with dark themes. It’s really fascinating and I was so enraptured with it that I wanted to ask Teddy, the creator, a few questions.

    MP3 of “Tussy”
    MP3 of “Fiery Ring”

S: First off, Appetite. Why the name? Does it mean something for the concept of the musical project or was it just something fun?

Teddy: I was trying to think of cool band names (as usual) and I thought of Appetite.  I liked the way it sounded and then thought about what it might mean.  I think I initially related to the idea of hunger in making music, being hungry in part to be heard but also hungry to just make music no matter what, even if no one heard it.  Now I find even more potential meanings for the name, which is my favorite thing about words and language in general, meanings morph with time and context.

  8. Botany’s Feeling Today EP out August 16

    August 2, 2011 by Steph

“Botany’s debut Feeling Today explores the cosmic nexus of shimmering psychedelia, blissed-out pop, and instrumental hip-hop, as he turns recycled sounds into something thoroughly modern.”

Adding on to my love for music from Texas is Botany, calling home “somewhere between Denton and Austin.” I’ve been obsessed with “Feeling Today” by Botany (aka Spencer Stephenson) for almost a year and now the containing EP will finally be released on August 16th and doesn’t disappoint. The Feeling Today EP slices together noise samples into a beautiful amalgamation. Each sound trickles together and blends like similar shades of watercolor. “Feeling Today” feels like morning light on an empty city street. It gives a sense of brightness. In its simplicity, Botany is intensely beautiful and deeply personal.

  9. Bright Archer West Coast Tour

    July 31, 2011 by Steph

Portland’s Johanna Kunin’s vocals are strong and firm. In “Hidden Systems” Johanna, along with various other musicians under the moniker Bright Archer, tells the story of nature, history, and love as a lullaby of powerful and dynamic proportions. The song is from the Bright Archer’s recent release Hidden Systems.

With Hidden Systems out now, Bright Archer will be touring the West Coast this August, performing at Los Angeles’ Bardot on Monday, August 22nd.
