  1. WATCH THIS: First Aid Kit – “Emmylou”

    April 24, 2012 by Steph

I love how sweet and charming this song is. A great tribute to some of the great singing couple/duos – Emmylou Harris & Gram Parsons and June Carter Cash & Johnny Cash. Who would have thought that a Swedish duo would be making some of the best Americana today?

  2. WATCH THIS A2S PREMIERE: Tic Tic Boom – “The Open”

    April 18, 2012 by Steph

Kalem and I had so much fun making this video with Tic Tic Boom! I’ve gotten to know the front-duo Mike and Leilani of this dark synth pop band pretty well over the last year and they’re really great to work with.

We wanted to create something a bit more than a live session, but not quite a music video for the acoustic version of the track “The Open” from the band’s sophomore EP Reasons & Rhymes. What we ended up with is what we’re calling a “b-sides video” for this b-side track and I hope you enjoy it!

We filmed all outside of Mike and Leilani’s apartment in Hollywood, California and inside their home studio.

  3. WATCH THIS: Wild Child – “Pillow Talk”

    April 10, 2012 by Steph

My love for indie pop guy/girl duets runs deep. I can’t say that Austin’s Wild Child is the most original, but they’re charming, catchy, and adorable. They have a Slow Club vibe in the sense that the melody is happy, but the tone is sad. Their video here “Pillow Talk” depicts a sweet, dream-like work a la Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

This is the title track from their debut album released last October on Major Nation Records. Not sure why their just starting to surface, but I’m curious to see what else this band brings and if they can continue to charm!

  4. WATCH THIS: Alcoholic Faith Mission – “Into Pieces”

    February 8, 2012 by Steph

It’s funny how you can hear the name of a band or artist so much that you feel like you know their M.O. I felt this way about Alcoholic Faith Mission–that I knew their schtick and that they weren’t my thing. Then comes a press release with their new video to prove me wrong. Not only are they nothing like I imagined, but their visceral and Aboriginal-inspired video for their single “Into Pieces” shocked me into listening.

The single, from their upcoming LP Ask Me This is as if The Polyphonic Spree joined Bon Iver on an Active Child remix. Falsetto-laden and littered with harmonious choruses over a scaling piano, synth beats, and an arpeggio of vocals, “Into Pieces” is striking in both beauty and strangeness. And yes, Brooklyn Vegan loves them too.

Ask Me This will be out on Old Flame Records on March 27th.

  5. WATCH THIS: St. Vincent – “Cheerleader”

    February 7, 2012 by Steph

My obsession with St. Vincent is possibly unhealthy. I am absolutely infatuated and this new video, premiered today by Google Music and Youtube, is no exception. The feelings it provokes in such a hyperbolic and artistic way are magical…evoking sadness and desperation. It brings the song “Cheerleader” (from St. Vincent’s completely fantastic Strange Mercy) forward in, not a new light, but in a brighter, more tangible one. Sensational.

  6. WATCH THIS: Active Child – “Hanging On”

    January 20, 2012 by Steph

Brand new video from one of the catchiest singles of 2011.

  7. WATCH THS: The Loom – “For The Hooves That Gallop, and the Heels That March”

    October 25, 2011 by Steph

Brooklyn’s The Loom’s debut album Teeth is coming out November 1st on Crossbill Records and their single “For The Hooves That Gallop, and the Heels That March” has this pretty video that was premiered on NPR. It’s visually stunning and the song is an eerie folk track with a sultry sax melody, jazz percussion that moves the the falsetto group vocals like a spoon through molasses, and an accosting and powerful driving guitar. I’m not sure I entirely understand the concept for the video, but try to watch it and just absorb beauty. Tour dates for these guys below the break.

  8. WATCH THIS: The Ting Ting – “Hang It Up”

    October 21, 2011 by Steph

The Brit duo are back and still incredibly catchy pop with a slight hip-hop twinge bringing a video inspired by San Diego via 1999. Dig it.

  9. WATCH THIS: Butcher the Bar – “Alpha Street West”

    October 15, 2011 by Steph

It’s no surprise that Manchester UK’s Butcher the Bar (aka Joel Nicholson) will soon be heading out on a European tour with Death Cab for Cutie. The indie pop folk instrumentation with a whispy tenor voice and strong clucking percussion is like Death Cab crossed with Kevin Devine on Prozac. What might surprise you is that Nicholson manages not to burst out laughing in this “gravity-defying” video, where he encounters all sorts of flying objects. He does crack a smile a few times though. And so will you at this fun video.

“Alpha Street West,” is taken from Nicholson’s newest Morr Music release, For Each A Future Tethered.
