Young Wonder’s EP Show Your Teeth released on May 6th, has been the object of my aural obsession for the last two weeks. In particular, two of the tracks have been on repeat–“Time” feat. Sacred Animals (another artist that I love) and “To You.”
First, let me ask you–how often do you fully experience music? Not just listen, but find the music so visceral that you feel it pulsating? Young Wonder has the magical ability to sync all of the senses and envelop you in the beats and sweeping melody. It’s a sensory experience.
The duo hails from Cork Ireland (as does my mother’s family so perhaps it’s some genetic connection I’m feeling) but their music seems universally influenced. Take my first favorite track from the EP, “To You” for example–it features a bagpipe, with an Asian-influenced melody, but it doesn’t seem out of place in their downtempo dup-pop. The music video features a viking funeral for a cat…of course (enjoy below). “Time”‘s sound is more ambient and sorrowful, feeling like running for your life on a freezing day. The video is a perfect visual interpretation.
The other tracks on the EP–“Electrified,” Seventeen,” and “Bullet” round out the EP nicely and make it altogether an addictive compilation, although I would admit they smartly put their best foot (or feet, rather) forward in the release. Highly Recommended.
