Angels & Airwaves’ Love

LOAE?

When I heard that Angels & Airwaves was releasing another album, my immediate response was, “They’re still together? That’s a shame.” I’ve been incredibly disappointed with Tom DeLonge’s “I’m going to save the world” movement since the first time I got “The Adventure” in my ears. The entire project sounds like a crippled Blink 182, his pretention is so thick its opaque, and his hair is retarded. I mean seriously… what is going on with his hair.

Tom contemplates his horrible wig

Needless to say, I pressed play on the new album Love with very low expectations. Part of me was desperately hoping that I was going to be surprised by what I heard. That part of me was disappointed. About the album, Mr. DeLonge says, “Things happen unpredictably and take you to these epic soundscapes. It’s very much in the spirit of Angels & Airwaves, but it sounds way, way more thought-out and way more ambitious.” He is mostly lying. If you have listened to previous A&A albums, then you’ve already heard every song on this album. I guess maybe the words are different. He repeats every line a thousand times, so that he can stretch three minutes worth of writing into six minutes of song. There are ambient things happening, to try and justify his use of the word “epic”. Side note: never, ever refer to anything that YOU HAVE MADE as epic. That is a word for OTHER people to use.

They were serious when they took this picture

About halfway through the album, I happened across what I had read was the first single. “Hallucinations” sounded like everything else so I skipped it. Then the same song played again so I skipped it as well. I think it was called “The Moon-Atomic” this time. The next track was called “Clever Love”, and I waited for it to start for four minutes, then it ended. The next song was called “Soul Survivor (…2012)” and based on the title alone, I skipped it. For the last two tracks, I skipped immediately to the middle of them to see if anything distinguishable from the rest of the album was happening… it wasn’t.

Bottom line, this is an Angels & Airwaves album. It is what happens when an artist gets so much money that they no longer think they need to listen to what anyone else says. It sounds exactly like everything else A&A has done, and I guess you’ll like it if you’re one of those kids who takes the time to figure out how to type an upside down “A” when you type their name, but me and you probably won’t ever get along.

Still serious.

They also made a movie with the same title as this album. It’s about an astronaut who meets God after traveling through a wormhole. Also something about the civil war. Tom DeLonge has lost his mind, and I really hope it doesn’t adversely affect the next Blink 182 album.

Dude just going off of your name (j-man) your probably an absolute tool and im sure you listen to some awful band like nickleback or godsmack or perhaps avenged 7 fold, shit you probably throw in some stupid r&b artist with auto voice on.. but your review for this album is completely off and im not even that big of a fan of ava but i did take the time to listen to it… tom delonge has done numerous projects and has been successful with all of them. He is very talented and in order for you to get this album you have to sit your self down and listen, to me it sounds like you maybe had a grudge against tom for awhile. I feel people who have grudges against him are probably the type of people that got picked on in highschool by guys like tom… maybe like you in this case.. i will agree tom over does it with saying hes starting a revolution and its the best music ever created…but its darn good, i could go into further detail and do my own review but i just dont feel like typing anymore. Just do me a favor…the next time you have a long drive to take especially at night, throw the cd in and tell me what you think about it then. That goes for all music, theres always a time and place to listen to certain types of music… in your case when ur jamming your nickleback cd, im sure your in the back of a truck with a bottle of wiskey and some other dirt lip friends talking about how you all wanna be big rock stars… do me a favor and stick to reveiwing your meat rock bands and leave the sophisticated stuff to people like tom…

    Dave and Darren,
With such insightful input, it’s no wonder you’re the only brave souls who have mustered up the courage in this forum of anonymity to post what your heart really feels.
Darren, Let’s start with your comment. It’s nearly impossible to decipher, but what I believe you are trying to imply here is that J-Man is a “fucking dickhead” by way of the popular use of “fucking” to exaggerate things. Such as Abso-fucking-lutely! and other such phrases that so blatantly display your IQ like a ring girl at a boxing match. However you still unfortunately failed pretty hard. Next time try giving me a premise or two from which you based this conclusion, this will make your argument significantly more valid.
Dave, your lack of grammar, failure to flow your thoughts together in a truly cohesive manner and inability to recall the high school class system leads me to believe that perhaps you weren’t fortunate enough to attend… So I feel compelled to inform you.
Normally people who end up in Pop-Punk bands aren’t the ring leaders of the social circles you’d like to believe they are. This is why most pop-punk songs contain messages of “why they just can’t quite get the girl”, or “why nobody likes them”. The fact that Tom was voted the prom king of the highschool he was expelled from doesn’t exclude him from this group. Tom was likely the lonely little punk kid, and I doubt he spent much time on the “giving-end” of peer to peer harassment. So if anything, I would think that the J-Man you’ve painted in your picture would be the one picking on Tom.
I’ve been a fan of blink-182 since I can remember and thoroughly enjoyed Boxcar Racer however can tell you that Tom’s side projects have been successful for the same reason that George Lucas’ more recent films remain successful. People buy their product based on their reputation. They don’t buy them because they are good, they buy them because of the history the creator has. AVA is to Tom DeLonge’s career what Episode One was to Star Wars. It promised to rebuild, make it stronger and faster and better than before. Then it fell short of what was promised and just kind of let the world down… “AVA” is JarJar Binks.

@Darren – Thanks for your input. I imagined you crying into a webcam when I read your thoughtful comment.

@Dave – I like all of the music you mentioned! Are you a psychic? Seriously though, Nickelback only ever plays one song as well, but at least I like that song.
I think I may adopt “Meat Rock” into my vocabulary as an actual genre of music.
I know that Tom “Hairtastrophe” DeLonge has had other projects. I’m guessing that when you say “numerous” you’re talking about Box Car Racer, which I enjoyed. They made more than one song, and most of them were good.
As a side note… Do you realize you typed 108 words AFTER you said you didn’t feel like typing anymore?

@MSB – Short, sweet, to the point… I like your style.

@Neil – I’m thinking maybe you should apply to write for us

  7. Emery says:

hey j-man get a fucking life and acctually listen to this great music or stop being a little fuckin prick and bagging on them and tom. i hope one day tom reads this shit and beats your ass AVA is better than any other music ive ever heard no joke and there concerts are the best ive been to 3 and there all great memories and you know what dude you should look up the lyrics, thats what really matters, they will make you think about how much of a fucking failure you are to the world, how you sit on the computer all day and talk shit about bands when you havent even listened to them, like dave said pop in any angels and airwaves CD and youll see, youll se how great they are like “everythings magic” c’mon its hard to beat that ha your just sad cause the only music you listen to involves some guy ass dude in sunglasses and a leather braclet with a double pedal to emphasize his gayness so to rap it all up get a fuckin life j man and acctually listen to any song from them and youll see you god damn cunt fuck, AVA forever 😛

  8. Emery says:

    GO FUCK YOURSELF 😀

  9. Matt says:

I’m sorry did I hear you say that you like Avenged Sevenfold and Nickelback? If yes, then you are thoroughly unqualified to review music. Apparently you skipped half of the songs on the album….way to be thorough…

Also, why are people (you included, J-man) so angry that Angels and Airwaves does not sound like blink-182. He purposefully set out to do just that…If you want a blink clone listen to +44, hell there’s 2/3 of blink in it anyway.

  10. J-Man says:

@fuck you j man – My fucking stupid what?

    @Emery – http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2002/10/11/
@Emery again – Thank you for the smilies

@Matt – You didn’t “hear” me say anything, because we are communicating via text. Also – you misunderstood. I would be happier if Angels DIDN’T sound like Blink. My problem is that they aaaalmost do, but then not really. They sound like Blink, but missing some pieces.

  11. Dr Oodles says:

@J-Man- You can suck my chode.

  12. Danny says:

I must disagree with some things you say, it’s not really a simple album to listen to. maybe Tom Delonge is a visionaire, maybe he is ahead of all us meat heads and this is the music of the future, or maybe on the other hands he just lost his mind. I mean, you would loose your mind if you had all that money like all of a sudden. What’s wrong with his hair? He always had weird hairstyles, maybe the fact that he’s gotten fat is more concerning to the Blink 182 fans. I really admire Tom for the simple fact that he is not a great guitar player, he’s an ok singer, but he managed to reach the top of the world through his music, so he’s an outlier from all of us. If you ask me I think he is bi-polar and his illness is starting to show off in his music, neverthless i listened to a couple of songs from this album but I skipped a lot. Nice review, a bit rough, but hey…it’s what most people think. At times I found this album like the most amazing album ever because of one or two songs, but you are right it’s not a particulary commercially succesfull album ( how could it be the whole thing was free ).
AvA= a band with the noblest of intentions, highest hopes and good hearts, sadly with a low echo, few can hear what they say from high above. I don’t judege people by what musical genres they listen and neither should you, people change and music changes, it’s all a fucking dull and empty world ,sometimes the best thing you can do to make that fly is pop a CD and watch a sunrise with your favourite band on.

  13. […] you’re reading this, you’ve probably read my Angels and Airwaves review, so you know my feelings on Tom’s solo venture: too much experimental, not enough music, with a […]

  14. Ben C says:

J-Man, I am not going to be like the others here and curse you out for this review. However, at least allow me to assist you in being a better music critic. First off, in order to be a proper music critic, you need to eliminate all sense of bias you have against the artist and just listen to the music and write your review just about the music and how it sounds. You did neither here. It seems to me you are extremely biased in your review of Love and Angels & Airwaves as a whole. Being that you admitted that you just skipped most of the songs on the album and still continued to bash the music and the band and Tom, I doubt people who actually take music critics’ reviews seriously will do so for yours. You just need to look at the whole situation and what Tom is trying to achieve with his music and at least appreciate his ambition and the landscapes and settings he creates with his music. Like Dave says, listen to it at night during a long drive or walk. I don’t know, but you can just feel the music better and have a much more creative mind and you can really picture the landscapes or images the songs in Love create. Please do not write a response bashing me just because I disagree with you. This is supposed to be a non-confrontational circumstance. Just think about what I’m telling you. And for all who agree with me, thank you.
